The proposed 2007 Civil Rights Tax Relief Act would “amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to exclude from gross income amounts received on account of claims based on certain unlawful discrimination and to allow income averaging for backpay and frontpay awards received on account of such claims, and for other purposes.”   The full text of HR 1540 is here.

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga) introduced the bill in the House of Representatives on March 15, 2007.  It has 19 co-sponsors.  NELA supports the bill.  It is presently in the the House Ways and Means Committee.
