Alaska Court Records: How to Research Them On-Line
The Alaska Court System doesn’t currently post court records on-line. (The local federal court does. That’s a later topic.) But it does post some essential information from those records.
Trial Court Records
If you’re looking for records from the Alaska District Court or Superior Court, start your research by going to the Search page of CourtView. Enter the information you already know (name of party, case file number, etc.). Hit Search, and you’ll find a list of possible cases. Select the “Case Number” link (far right column) for the one that meets your interest.
Which link meets your interest? If it isn’t obvious, look at the first part of the Case Number. For example, “4FA-98-00045CR” means that the case was filed in the 4th Judicial District, in Fairbanks, in 1998; was the 45th case filed that year; and is a Criminal matter. “3PA-06-0032DV” means that the case was a Domestic Violence matter filed in the 3rd Judicial District, and was the 32nd case filed in Palmer in 2006.
Once you’ve selected the right case, then where you go next depends on what further information you’re looking for. If you want to see the final result of the case (if it’s closed), then hit the “Disposition” tab. For the names of all the parties to the case, hit “Parties.” For the names of the attorneys, hit ”Summary.” For a summary of events each time the judge held a hearing, hit the “Dockets” tab.
You won’t see the actual pleading from the Court’s file. You’ll see a summary. To see the actual records, you (or someone else) will need to go to the hard copy file at the courthouse.
Appellate Court Records
If you’re looking for information on an appeal to the Alaska Court of Appeals (for most criminal appeals), or to the Alaska Supreme Court, go to the Appellate Case Management search page.
