The Weekend: Four Teammates

As we ponder why Manny Ramirez may have required human chorionic gonadotropin, a female fertility drug, for his “personal health issue,” news reports tell us that former Red Sox center fielder Dom DiMaggio has passed away at age 92.I am not saying that years ago ballplayers were perfect. God knows that the major leagues were full of racists and alcoholics once upon a time, not so very long ago. But if you want to read about the sport of baseball, and the wonderful personal relationship of four players — Dom DiMaggio, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky and Ted Williams — by all means read David Halberstam’s The Teammates. It’s just a little book. It’s a very gratifying book. Quote from an Amazon reviewer: “Warm and nostalgic, the book opens in October 2001, as Dom DiMaggio, accompanied by Boston writer Dick Flavin and Johnny Pesky, makes a melancholy car trip from Boston to Florida to pay a last visit to Ted Williams, who is dying. As the men drive from Boston to Florida, they reminisce about their playing days more than fifty years in the past, recalling anecdotes about their friendship and talking about their lives, post-baseball.”
