WESTLAW Publishing Criteria
Over the last couple years of reviewing opinions from the District of Alaska, I’ve been frequently puzzled by several phenomena on WESTLAW. WESTLAW publishes some, but not all lengthy substantive orders of apparent equal importance. Sometimes WEST will publish an opinion several years after its issuance. I’ve wondered, too, how to ask WEST to publish an opinion.
WEST has now offered an explanation of its publication criteria that addresses several of these issues. As you might guess, the publication criteria are somewhat subjective. But WEST’s reply does offer several more concrete pieces of information, including the following:
Attorneys may submit decisions of interest for review by West editors and potential inclusion in West caselaw collections. The email address for submitting federal decisions from all levels and for state appellate court decisions is west.attysubmissions@thomson.com
The email address for submitting state trial court decisions is TLR.trialdocsreceiving@thomson.com
