State of Alaska Email Retention Policy
The State of Alaska, on August 7, 2009, issued its Email Retention Policy for executive branch employees. That policy states, in relevant part:
When executive branch employees conduct state business through email they must, whenever feasible, use the state’s electronic mail system. In some circumstances, employees may need to use, or may inadvertently use, private email accounts to conduct state business. In those instances, employees must send copies of those message to their state email accounts.
“Executive employees” (Commissioners, Directors, etc.) may delete email older than 90 days if the State has not received any public records request or legal hold. Email sent or received by non-executive employees must be archived after 90 days.
